Your consumer unit (often called the fuse box) is the heart of your home's electrical system. Older units with rewireable fuses or no RCD protection simply don't offer the level of safety that modern regulations require.
We install high-quality, metal-clad consumer units fitted with RCBOs or dual RCD protection, surge protection where required, and clear circuit labelling - so if something does trip, you'll know exactly where to look.
Before fitting a new board, we test the existing circuits to make sure they're safe to connect. If we find any issues, we'll explain them clearly and give you options before any further work is carried out.
What we offer
- Fuse box to consumer unit replacements
- Metal-clad units compliant with BS 7671
- RCBO and dual-RCD configurations
- Surge protection devices (SPD)
- Main earthing and bonding upgrades
- Clear, accurate circuit labelling
- Pre-installation circuit testing
- Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Control notification
When to upgrade your consumer unit
- You still have rewireable (wire) fuses
- There's no RCD protection in your installation
- Your unit has a plastic casing and is under the stairs or in an escape route
- Breakers trip frequently with no obvious cause
- You're adding circuits for an extension, kitchen or EV charger
- An EICR has recommended an upgrade
Why choose SWR Electrical
Shock protection
RCD protection cuts the power in milliseconds if a fault is detected - it can be lifesaving.
Less nuisance tripping
RCBOs isolate a single faulty circuit rather than plunging the whole house into darkness.
Fully certified
Every upgrade is tested, certified and notified to Building Control as required.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a consumer unit change take?
Most domestic consumer unit replacements are completed in a single day. Your power will be off for part of that time, and we'll let you know in advance when to expect it.
What's the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?
An RCD protects a group of circuits against earth leakage, while an RCBO combines that protection with overload protection for an individual circuit. RCBOs mean a fault on one circuit won't affect the others.
